With nothing else new to go over and it being teatime, Dykeman decided to let Shapes head off home. Best to have him bright-eyed and bushy-tailed come the start of the new day. Dykeman, himself, lingered for a while, replaying the events of the day in his head, wondering if there was anything they’d missed. It was the vicar’s murder that bothered him most. There was something about it that just seemed, well, odd. Quite what it was, he couldn’t put his finger on, try as he might. It looked like a straightforward stabbing, most likely by someone the vicar knew. What was it that was nagging him?

But, it was no good, his brain needed some time off. Trying to force things to happen just wasn’t going to work. It almost never did. Food, a nice cup of tea and a potter in his veg garden was the thing to do.

The truth was, as he went to bed that night, he was more than a little concerned he might walk into the station the following morning to find out yet another guest up at the vicarage had met with an untimely and violent death, despite the presence of two constables. Perhaps both he and Shapes should have stayed there too. It was a worrying time.
